Russian School of Piano Playing for Beginners & Intermediate & Advanced Students

One of the most significant features of the origins of the Russian tradition of piano teaching is making it possible for pupils to learn with high-level piano teachers from the very beginning which creates a very solid foundation and makes it unnecessary to undo damages done by unqualified teachers at later stages. As Josef Lhevinne wrote in 1924 after his emigration to America, "… let us consider first of all the most important thing, a good foundation in real musicianship. Certain things cannot be skipped in the early lessons without appearing to the enormous disadvantage of the student in later years. Possibly here is the greatest waste of music teaching, poor or careless instruction in the earlier years. The teacher of beginners is a person of great importance in all education, particularly in music. In Russia the teacher of the beginners is often a man or a woman of real distinction. The work is not looked upon as an ignoble one, worthy of only the failures or the inferior teacher. … The folly of paying a teacher a considerable fee for instruction that should have been given at the very beginning, is too obvious to comment upon." Another important feature of the Russian tradition of learning piano is a solid, reliable and all-encompassing technical foundation. Russian music schools, colleges and conservatories have technique exams from grade 1 onwards without which it is impossible to proceed to repertoire exams. Scales and studies are constant components and sometimes also lots of exercises. As Rachmaninov wrote in 1917, "In the music schools of Russia great stress is laid upon technique. Possibly this man be one of the reasons why some of the Russian pianists have been so favourably received in recent years. … Technique … is at first made a matter of paramount importance. All students must become technically proficient. None are excused. … "Personally, I believe this matter of insisting upon a thorough technical knowledge is a very vital one. The mere ability to play a few pieces does not constitute musical proficiency. It is like those music boxes which possess only a few tunes, The student's technical grasp should be all-embracing."
