Elena Gnessina
1874 - 1967
Elena Gnessina was a Russian and Soviet composer and music educator. Among her works were compositions such as piano studies and works for children as well as textbooks on music. She studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory under Vasily Safonov and also had lessons from Ferruccio Busoni as well as Sergei Taneev. In 1895 Gnessina established a private music school in Moscow together with her sisters Evgenia and Maria, which in 1926 became the Gnessin State Musical College. Among her students were the pianist Lev Oborin and the composer Aram Khachaturian. The teachers at the school included Mikhail Gnesin and Alexander Gretchaninov. She was involved in running the administration of the college until her death.
