📖 "Dietrich Buxtehude ranks as the leading composer in Germany between Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach. Buxtehude's organ praeludia, avant-garde compositions in their own day, were highly regarded by organists of succeeding generations and form part of the common repertory of organists today. His vocal compositions and sonatas, although less celebrated than his organ works, also represent outstanding contributions to their respective genres." Kerala J. Snyder Dietrich Buxtehude. Organist in Lübeck (1987)
📖 "The cultivation of extreme versatility is probably the attribute that most distinguishes the professional musicians of Buxtehude's day from those of our own. Perhaps the most versatile of all the municipal musicians [of Lübeck] who worked with Buxtehude, … Hans Iwe, wrote that 'in the beginning I learnt to play music on all kinds of instruments …, and afterwards I sang … at weddings and other events, and I often substituted … on the bass violin, Otherwise, through the grace of God, I practiced my art so diligently, that I do not hesitate to play violin, viola da gamba, violine, all manner of woodwinds, cornetto, dulcian, trombone, bass trombone and flutes in a suitable manner; also if necessary I can serve with keybard and vocal music.'" Kerala J. Snyder Dietrich Buxtehude. Organist in Lübeck (1987)
📖 "Dietrich Buxtehude made Lübeck his home for nearly forty years, and it was there that he achieved his fame as a composer and performing musician; the designation 'Organist in Lübeck' is found after his name in widelyt scattered manuscripts. … As organist of St. Mary's, Buxtehude commanded the most prestigious and well-paid musical post in Lübeck. … In addition to whatever private chamber music Buxtehude played with the Lübeck municipal musicians, he worked professionally with them in a number of ways: in the Abendmusiken, in performances during the services at ST. Mary's, at weddings, and probably for dinner music in the homes of the business aristocracy." Kerala J. Snyder Dietrich Buxtehude. Organist in Lübeck (1987)
📖 "On the west side, between the two pillars under the towers, one can see the large and magnificent organ, which, like the small organ, is now presided over by the world famous organist and composer Dietrich Buxtehude. Of particular note is the great Abend-Music, consisting of pleasant vocal and instrumental music, presented yearly on five Sundays between St. Martin's and Christmas, following the Sunday vesper sermon, from 4 to 5 o'clock, by the aforementioned organist as director, in an artistic and praiseworthy manner. This happens nowhere else." 1697 edition of the Lübeck guidebook In Kerala J. Snyder Dietrich Buxtehude. Organist in Lübeck (1987)
📖 "Late in 1705 … Johann Sebastian Bach, at the age of twenty, made his famous trip from Arnstadt to visit Buxtehude in Lübeck … [and] to hear [him] play the organ. The account of the trip in Bach's obituaty … states: 'In the art of the organ he took the words of Bruhns, Reinken, Buxtehude, and several good French organists as models. Here in Arnstadt he was once moved by an especially strong desire to hear as many good organists as possible, so he undertook a journey to Lübeck, indeed by foot, in order to listen to the famous Organist of St. Mary's Church there, Dietrich Buxtehude. He remained there, not without profit, for almost a quarter of a year, and then returned to Arnstadt.'" Bach-Dokumente III, p. 82 Kerala J. Snyder Dietrich Buxtehude. Organist in Lübeck (1987)
📖 "Bach must have made numerous copies of Buxtehude's music, which he himself studied and later made availbale to his circle of relatives, pupils and friends. Thirty of Buxtehude's organ works are transmitted in manuscripts emanating from this circle … . Indeed, Bach must be considered one of the three central figures responsible for the preservation and dissemination of Buxtehude's music." Kerala J. Snyder Dietrich Buxtehude. Organist in Lübeck (1987)
📖 "Buxtehude must have read [Andreas] Werckmeister's composition treatise [Harmonologia Musica ] with great interest, because it teaches the same techniques of invertible counterpoint and canonic writing that he himself had cultivated… In addition to the interests Werckmeister shared with Buxtehude in learned counterpoint, organ construction, and the expansion of tonal horizons, he also became a collector of Buxtehude's organ music." Kerala J. Snyder Dietrich Buxtehude. Organist in Lübeck (1987)
📖 On Buxtehude the man: "From the [meager] information that … exists … a multifaceted personality emerges to match the broad stylistic range of the music that he composed. In addition to his varied activities as a musician - composer, keyboard player, conductor - he worked with both words and numbers as a poet and an accountant. He was both a dutiful employee - 'a faithful servant of the church,' - and a bold entrepreneur in his management of the Abendmusiken. His choice of texts for his vocal music indicates deep Christian piety, while his portrait in 'Domestic Music Scene' shows a man of the world… He was generous with his own funds in helping others and in offering hospitality, but he was also a skillful fundraiser… He was cosmopolitan in his outlook but hardly adventurous in his travel. Buxtehude had an excellent commande of language … Besides German and Danish, he knew Latin and Greek, French, Italian, and Swedish." Kerala J. Snyder Dietrich Buxtehude. Organist in Lübeck (1987)
